I’ve always noticed how things come together — why something looks right, feels right or moves the way it does. As a kid, I had as much fun taking LEGO apart and remixing the pieces into something new as I did recreating the picture on the box.
I was drawn to colour early. Dad saw the world through science and engineering. Mum loved to cha-cha and had a strong sense of fashion. Growing up Australian-Filipino, my cousins and I were always encouraged to perform at family parties. So I grew up around both — curiosity about how things worked, and movement, style and performance as part of everyday life.
I’m Alvin de Castro. I live in Melbourne, and I’m a graphic designer and choreographer.
My ideas might start as an image, end up on a T-shirt, move on screen or become a short dance film. I’m drawn to ideas that can live in more than one place — from fashion to film, stage to street — and still hold together by design.
If I can surround myself with art and bring different ideas, disciplines and people together through creative direction, that’s the space I want to be in.
